the lady at target told me that this was a timer for the camera but wasnt sure how to use it. i cant figure out how to use it either and i dont have the money to order an instruction manual so if anyone can tell me how it works that would be great... and if its not a timer than what is it?

I assume that is a Canon TL/QL, right? Then here is a free manual:

hey thanks a lot for the manual link

it is a stopped down metering level but since i dont have a battery i cant use it... oh well

thanks again

You do not need a battery to use the stop down metering lever. It allows you to use the FL series of lenses on the camera. The FL lenses have no full aperture metering signal so you have to stop them down to use them. Only problem with that is it gets hard to see through the lens as the aperture gets closer to f/16.

As for batteries, I think you can use 675 zinc-air hearing aid batteries w/ a #9 o-ring for a spacer. That's what I use in my FTb-N, and it's only about five years newer than yours (FTb-N was introduced in '73 the TL in '68).

According to the Canon Camera Museum site, the TL did not have a self-timer.
I hope this was some help.
