I have purchased a 40d but am new to photography. Although I have read the entire manual, I would wonder if there is any tutorials on the internet that start you off from the beginning and move you long?

Would it be better to purchase a book?

forums are a great place.. search for topics your trying to figure out, because 9 times out of 10 someone has already asked the question.. and it bugs people when you keep posting the same questions over and over again.

a great book is understanding exposure.. it will answer a lot of your questions.

youtube.com is a great source of tutorials. They will have all the basics you need to know. From how to turn the camera on to how to bracket exposures. Check it out. Canon's website should also have video tutorials on it. Check that out as well.
