My friend just acquired an old Nikon D90 and is looking for a decent but inexpensive as possible, starter zoom lens, something around an 18-55mm. Any recommendations?

"Inexpensive as possible" pretty much determines the choice, which would be the Nikon 18-55. If your friend wants a faster lens he/she can get the excellent Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 for about $420.

Agree with 18-55 as pretty much the only choice for "as inexpensive as possible").

However, depending on budget, maybe a nice lens will be available in the used market (eBay, Craigslist, KEH.com, B&H or Adorama used department).

How old can a D90 be?

It launched 8/27/08 and didn't start shipping till a month or so later.

That's not yet 2 years ago!
