This was the first picture I ever took with my XSi.

Not the best..but comments would be appreciated

The flash creates really harsh shadows. The WB is off it looks like. The focal point is centered, which is hardly ever a good thing. I also think the perspective could have been more interesting.

Ew, on-camera flash. Harsh lighting, ugly shadows and everything.

Crank up the ISO, turn the flash off and set your white balance. Grainy photos look a lot nicer than badly-lit photos. Centered compositions can certainly work, but they often work best when you create symmetry.
