The thread dealing with Ms. Cyrus has become too long to try to make sense of, but I wanted to put in my two cents, as a grandfather and and as one who appreciates art. I think that the pose with the blanket is one of the best photographs I have seen in a long time. I do not see anything distasteful about it. I have seen photographs in advertisements that bother me much more.
The photograph of Ms. Cyrus reminds me of a painting by one of the old masters. I feel that it would be perfectly acceptable to most viewers if it were a painting, or a chalk, or even a pencil rendering. We photographers like to pose ourselves a artists. Which of us would not be proud to produce an image such as this?
Obscenity rests in the exploitation of the subject. Pornography is an appeal to the more purulent appetites.
I submit that this image does neither.
