Photos NOT OK to edit
Can you please tell me the difference? I have a D5100 and they're both auto focus lenses so will be fine with the d5100?

The af-d will not autofocus on your camera. The af-s will.

^^ what he said

the AF-S G also has manual focus override
They both seem to focus at the same speed.
The AF-S lens is much larger

The AF-D lenses requires an in-body focus motor as which is found in D90, d7000, d7100, d600/610/700/800/3/4 etc cameras

D5x00 and under require AF-S lenses which has a micro focus motor built into the lens itself.

you could upgrade to a d7000 and save significant $$$ by using AF-D lenses

fyi .. I have both the 50mm/1.8 D and G lenses

I love the "D" model but I have the AF motor. If you don't, go with the "G" of course.
