photoshop?

i use photoshop cs3 and it's awesome. i guess the next best thing would have to be lightroom. the price on that isn't as bad as photoshop...

The Gimp is good and it's free. It's not as robust as Photoshop but for strictly editing photos I haven't come across any features that it's missing. I use either program and rarely notice a difference other than interface.

I have Gimp on my Mac and Photoshop CS and Lightroom on my PC and I am absolutely in love with lightroom and its quick editing and organizational utilities. Gimp works really well too and its free!

But if you are a student I would take the already recommended route and pick up CS3 at a student discount.

You might be able to get away with Lightroom, but I use some of the more advanced CS3 features. I also use ACDSee Pro Photo Manager for when I need to use a photo online (convert / resize PSDs to JPGs).
