Poor man's macro

Close-up filters are junk. Tubes are very cheap and you're not adding extra glass that can degrade quality...

Well, the $10 close-up filters are pretty cheesy, but the two-element achromatic screw-in close-up lenses from Raynox, or the Canon 250 or 500 D, or the discontinued Nikon 6-T are VERY good performers. These work surprisingly well on many telephoto or tele-zoom lenses, and yield pretty good quality. These are thicker and heavier than the cheap "filter-sized" sets of three or four simply +diopter filters

Here's an eye-opener. Read the 100-300mm f/5.6 Nikkor's review.: Zoom Lenses For Nikon 'F' Mount: Telephoto

Well maybe, but for a bit of fun, I'm not expecting miracles from £8.49 for a set of 4! (plus £4 p&p)
Extension tubes on Ebay without AF (Auto Focus) is only a couple bucks and the ones with AF is still very cheap...

I plan to get some extension tubes, I watched a few videos on extension tubes and they really seem to work well for macro. IQ was still great and they really did let you get much closer to the subject, Ill probably pick some tubes up one of these days.

I played around with coupling my 50mm and my 24mm. I used gaffing tape for a temporary hold.
