pure curiosity - stock sites

Out of pure curiosity how to people make money from stock websites? they seem to offer rediculously low money for the work put into some photos it just doesn't seem possible to make anything from it. Is there more legit companies who deal with bigger clients and therefore make the artist more money? I don't have enough quality work to even consider entering it myself I just curious as to how it all works. Thanks!!

LOL!! no not quite I wouldn't have the guts to invest in that sort of stock knowing me it'd go belly up
