Quality LED's vs HMI entry lights

Alright, so i'm sure this topic has been posted many many times, but here's another one!

What are you really losing if you go LED over HMI. I shoot a lot of portrait work with natural light and sometimes it's just not enough (No, please don't recommend strobes, not the look i'm going for)

Anyway, whenever I rent LED's I come away pretty impressed. It leaves me wondering how much better could HMI's really be? I've never shot with any HMI equipment so it's tough for me to say that they aren't any better. But in terms of photography, especially portrait work, is it really worth the extra money?..
