Do you think a close, closer, closer type of photo works?

Something like this...

I know the DOF is too shallow on this photo, but whats your thoughts on the concept?

conceptually, I think it's an okay idea, but it would mostly depend on the details being just right. The red channel is clipped in a few places, and as you noted the DoF is a bit too shallow. The flower itself has enough going on that it can work at a few different levels though, I think. Though I'd probably do 4 separate pictures, arranged on a wall, as opposed to a 4 frame collage single picture. If I were combining them into one, I'd probably do a liner arrangement as opposed to a 2X2 arrangement.
