how was this photo done, is there a tutorial on it?

the individual only specified the following:

"The way I do it is to make 2 Curves layers....one lifting the brightness and the other darkening the image. I then mask them both and paint back in the shadows in the picture on the dark curve layer, and paint the highlights back in on the bright curve layer. I set my brush to 0% hardness, 40% flow, and about 23% opacity. "

i would rather prefer a tutorial in detail on how to do that, can anyone please advise?
