Wandered into the local brick-n-mortar camera store this morning and spied a mint-condition Tokina 100-300 f/5.6. My guess (based on the colors used) is late 70's/early 80's.

They let me take it home for a test drive. Not a bad lens. Walked around the back yard to test it for sharpness.

I'll need to do some more testing, but if it seems sharp all around I fancy I may just buy it.

OK, take it for a "test drive" but a refurbished 55-250 may be a better value and sharper.

It "might" be a surprisingly good lens. It "might" have a trick or two up its sleeve. Nikon's 100-300mm f/5.6 single-ring zoom is an astoundingly good close-up lens with the two-element 6T close-up lens reverse-mounted on the front of the lens. It might be pretty good optically. There were some pretty good zooms made back then, and the build quality was often quite high in those days.

What is the filter size on this lens? it looks like a rather small front filter size.

Nice find. I had a similar Tokina lens back in the late 70's only in Pentax mount. It was surprisingly a good lens that I used often. Really like the cat shot.

Yeah, Nikon has a 55-200 and a 55-250....both are cheap kit zoom type lenses...

Not in legacy glass to my knowledge. The only 55ish Nikon F mount lenses that I am aware of that are close are the 50–135 mm f/3.5 Macro, 50–300 mm f/4.5 & the 50–300 mm f/4.5 ED. Astro's lens is obviously a legacy lens from the film days.

Looks like a keeper to me.Nice Find.

beagle was commenting that a NEW-era Nikkor 55-250, an AF lens, might be better than this Tokina. I took your "Nikon makes a 55-200?" present-tense question to reflect the knowledge that YES, they currently still make a 55-200 and a 55-250.

Personally, I doubt that a new 55-200 or 55-250 kit lens would be much of an improvement over this 100-300/5.6 Tokina. I wanted to know the filter size because I was wondering if this Tokina 100-300/5.6 might be similar to the 100-300/5.6 Nikkor AI-S zoom.

Some of the better old tele-zoom designs from the 1980's are STILL quite good by modern standards.

I think if I remember correctly it is a 55mm filter. Like I said I had one similar in Pentax Mount.

I guess I'm confused. Since I shoot Nikon film I am familiar with F mount lenses.
Since I shoot Canon Digital not so much, but checking the Nikon site of current lenses I only find in the 55- range:
55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR DX AF-S
55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II DX AF-S
55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED
55–200mm AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor ED

I don't see a 55-250 in their lineup unless I am missing something. DSLR Camera Lenses: Compare NIKKOR Lenses | Nikon

If you mean my lens, it's 55mm.

And it does look a LOT like the Nikkor.

Yup, and I'm still not seeing a 55-250. Might be I'm just blind, Don't know for sure.

One thing I will say about the Tokina, IF my memory is correct. It can be a bit of a dust sucker cause if my rememberer is working that's a push pull lens.
