Tripod Buying

I've been out looking for a decent tripod for my Nikon D70. Was wondering what was a good value for money tripod and head.

My price range would be around USD$300. Would a cheap tripod do the job? or should I be spending more money on a good one. I'm using it mostly for some night photography of scenery, fireworks. Won't be using it for photographing people.

Manfrotto/Bogen is a very good brand. Slik is a good brand as well.

This is what i bought, its about $220. the Manfrotto 190x Prob with a included ballhead. as long as panoramas arnt your main focus, this setup will work great with your D70, its been a great tool for me.

Panoramas won't be my main focus, but I think i might take some every now and then. That looks like quite a value for money kit.

After looking at a few. What weight rating should i be looking at? i was looking at about 6KGs just to be safe. But would this be too much?

Well the D70 is under 1kg, so imagine what it would be with your heaviest lens on it. I'm sure 6kg would be more than enough. How do you like that an American using the metric system
