What are the benefits of RAW?

If your jpegs are 2MB...I would be seriously wondering about the compression which you have the settings on, cuz on my Minolta 5D they are 8MB

most raw + jpeg options dont give a max rez jpeg.... its just for referance and ease of preview..... thats why they are only a few MB.

These are my choices for sizing on the Nikon D80: (and I can choose which JPG to use when doing RAW + JPG)

• NEF (RAW): 12.4 MB
• JPEG Large / Fine: 4.8 MB
• JPEG Large / Normal: 2.4 MB
• JPEG Medium / Fine: 2.7 MB
• JPEG Medium / Normal: 1.3 MB
• JPEG Small / Fine: 1.2 MB
• JPEG Small / Normal: 0.6 MB

I am using JPG Large/Normal right now. I could bump it up to Larg/Fine, but that would eat up a lot of memory space, only 117 images on a 2gig disc. Time to buy a couple more 2 gigers I guess.

Go with the Large/fine.

When you say only 117 on a 2 gig card...is that RAW+JPEG? I don't see much of a reason to shoot RAW+Large JPEG. If you really must shoot RAW+ something...I suggest small fine or small normal even.

If all you need jpegs for is previewing on your computer, then Microsoft Windows XP users can install a Camera RAW Thumbnail generator. Very quick and small install:
