There is a program for the mac called Graphic Converter, I use it for post production before I open the image in photoshop. Photoshop is the dominant photo editing software primarily because it can add effects and adjustments in layers. This means that the original pixels in a picture do not get altered. This increases the life of the image and also the quality.

Graphic Converter has been around for years and is an extremely powerful program, many call it the poor mans photoshop. Its batch processing features are excellent. Google graphic converter, there may even be a windows version. I think it costs like thirty bucks or something. I hope this helps.
