Which medium?

I've owned a 500c/m and it's one of the best bits of engineering in the photographic world - available now at super-low prices. However, you are young and you haven't got £30 to blow every 12 shots - you're still learning. I reckon, go for a DSLR, once you've outgrown your FZ. But, remember - it ain't the camera!

How do you get to £30 Rob? Even shooting colour negative film and getting lab processed 10x10 prints I can't see a way to get the cost over £25. Shooting b&w and developing at home it's more like £4 to £5, including the film but before printing. Lab processed transparencies are going to be around £8 including the cost of something like Velvia 100.

My local lab prices for 120 are:

C41: $5 to develop +$0.70 a print (4x5 or 5x5)
BW: $6 to dev +$0.75 a print
E6: $7 to dev
