Here are 2 from a 1 yr shoot I did a few months back. I am new to this forum and thought they looked pretty good, so I want to know what I could do BETTER :)

I think #2 is a little soft.

I went ahead and deleted #2, it was out of focus.. I want to focus on #1, b/c I would really like to know how to improve this one.

I love this C&C it betters me so much!

Here it is again.. I turned up the contrast a little bit and down the exposure. Better or worse? Still over exposed?

I think it's still a little bright... but only in some spots. The lighting is very flat... flattens the facial features out completely. That's the biggest problem I think.

I edited your image a few times.

First I tried to tone down a few of the highlight spots. I used Viveza 2, a photoshop plugin. I also tried to give some depth to the face, darkening the right side (left of photo). I also evened the skin color tones, eliminating some color cast from the shirt, etc..

Then I rotated it so the wooden deck/bridge/whatever was straight horizontally. I cloned in the corners it left blank, instead of cropping.

Then I applied a few curves layers and a color gradient for a vintage look - for fun.

Thanks! So what is the best way to get away from flat lighting?

I love edits, thanks!

You are going to have to remember that this forum is very technical, which is great. However, if you are into child photography, if you post for cc here, vs another "moms" board, here they are going to tell you the photo is blown, too over exposed, if you post this same pic on a forum directed more for child photography, you will not get that. So take the cc with that in mind.

:)

Oh wow.. He looks ghost white in this picture! I'd try warming the picture up a bit, make the kid look a little more lively..
