After our predicted dusting tomorrow night, we're supposed to get up to 50 degrees. So even if we get some, it won't last long!

I've been pondering the origins of the saying, "The cats out of the bag". Does it mean that at one time it was acceptable to put cats in bags? I would think that is most difficult to do.

I think it is in the same vein as "Don't buy a pig in a poke"...

In the olden days you could buy meat on the black market, a young lamb, or some such. But if you didn't check the contents of the bag/sack you may eventually find that you have instead a dead cat picked up from the side of the road and sold as prime lamb.

The "pig in a poke" is the same - the poke being a bag. Don't buy a pig in a bag - it may not be a pig! :)
