One suggestion and it may sound harsh, try shooting the event. Having people standing around doesn't say anything other than point and shoot without thinking. Try your hand at getting the runners running, there is so much going on at these events.

You're right Tevo lol. The thought did cross my mind but being a novice I stupidly thought it was more important to capture the emotion of them at the finish line. I'll know for next time, thanks for your comment

If you had actually captured anything at the finish line you would probably have seen a lot of emotion. Your pictures would certainly have been more interesting. (We refer to it as "finish-line face" in a running forum I follow.) By the time you took these pictures, though, the emotion has left and all the runners are feeling is tired.

An even better spot for pictures might be ten or twenty yards/meters before the finish line, looking back up the course at the on-coming runners. That's where you'll see runners battling each other for supremecy - or just battling themselves for survival.
