18-200VR Surf shots?

I have a D300 with a 18-200, do you think I will manage to get good surf shots with this lens from land?

Most probably. If you have the equipment already why not just run out and try it. That's half the fun

I think you might find it a bit short. 200mm is a great length for general telephoto use, but don't expect any super-tight shots where the subject fills the frame.

you can always crop the photo to get a tighter frame, at a loss of resolution, of course. But 12 MP gives you a lot of leeway.

Just depends on how far out the brake is. But it should work find for skim.
