The camera is just a stupid machine that has zero artistic ability. You have to take control of the camera and the light. Auto mode will get you decent snap shots, but not really good shots.

It's likely your camera will not let you directly control the shutter speed, lens aperture or ISO but you can still use the scene modes to your advantage.
