What's new

1st time user, dslr or pas? Need help

keh.com sells used equipment. I've never actually bought anything from there but it might be worth a gander. I saw they have a bunch of used bodies that are older but might be a good starting place.

I've noticed people talking about shutter count when selling their cameras. What is this?

number of times you clicked on the shutter :) As everything, even the shutter has a limited duration (50000-200000).

my D700 have expected life of 150 000 shutter life, I wonder what happens when I reach that number, do the shutter just stop moving?

That's what I'm wondering. How can I find the shutter count? Do they generally stop working after 50,000-200,000 and you just have to buy a new camera?

It's like a motor to a car.

In general, a car is considered to be old, or becoming old at 100,000 miles.
I disagree, if well maintained, I think that's just being warmed up and can easily run 300,000.

That number about the shutter actuation life, is an expected life span, not a guarantee.
It's expected to last that long, but there is no spec sheet showing the true life span, they don't know.
I think if the camera wasn't abused, I think the shutter will last a bit longer.
But even thing's like climate, smoke-free, non smoke-free and stuff can change that.

Ok, thank you. Just as an fyi, unless it's a diesel I consider 100,000 pretty loose. My truck has 145,000 and although it can still do 9 second 0-60 and runs great other than a rough idle but you better believe I dream about pulling that motor out and rebuilding it with new cams, rockers, hi comp pistons, ported heads, and anything else that sounds good to my right foot. :) wouldn't mind a turbo either.

there should be a number on every picture you take with your camera, for my nikon is "DSC_0573", that number is also the shutter count.

not really (by the way, 4 digits= max 9999). You may always reset that number to make it starting from zero. For some Canon there is a free software that tells you the real shutter count: astrojargon - EOSInfo

Ok, looks like I'm buying a Nikon d50 friday! Just over 1,000 shutter count and comes with everything except the lens. Which leads me to the next question, what lens should I get her? I found this but it doesn't seem like a great idea

hey colin, this line from the ad :

"Will work on lens with a filter size of 52mm"

suggests to me this isn't actually a lens, more a lens filter/thingy which helps you create panoramic or fisheye photos using a lens you currently have. Assuming you don't have any lenses yet (and this is where it can become an expensive hobby), you'll need to work out which lenses you will use - eg a 18-105 would be a good "do it all" lens but it would depend on what you want to do with your photography. Eg fast lenses for sports/kids, wide lenses for scenery, primes for portraits - that kind of thing.

If costs are a factor (and we all know lenses can cost a fortune) - have a look at ebay, adorama, other online options - you may also consider sigma or tamron lenses - they fit and are more often than not a hell of a lot cheaper.

Happy snapping

Ahh, didn't notice that, thanks. She's probably gonna shot some diffrent things, little kids and motocross are both for sure, and who knows what else she'll do once she actually gets it.
What is a fast lens? Aren't the lens just that, a lens. And the camera affects shutter time, and all the other factors?

That won't work because it's a Canon mount. You can get other brands such as Tamron, Sigma, or Tokina, but they must be a Nikon mount (I'm a Canon guy so I don't recall the name of the mount...). However, there is probably a very similar kit 18-55 with stabilization for Nikon and will probably be about the same price.

Ok, thanks. Well I guess it was a scam/rubbery deal anyways. Dude didn't want to meet at a public place and then said it was sold. Whatever, he was smart to just quit talking to me. Be careful on craigslist.
