They look pretty nice! The frame thing on the first picture looks like it could be a shifted layer in Photoshop, I'm not 100% but that would be my guess.

I would recommend shooting Jonas (and all kids) from a lower camera perspective.
Making photos smaller will usually soften them.

The conversions lack contrast, and the lighting looks pretty soft, but flat, like it was an overcast day. What technique did you use to convert them to B&W?

Most digital photos need some sharpening, particularly Raw files since they are not sharpened in the camera like JPEGs are.

One of the big advantages gained from shooting Raw is that edits can be done locally in a photo, whereas JPEG edits done automatically by the camera are done to the photo globally.

Another advantage of Raw is the edits are not done in the camera, and there are a variety of applications that can be used to convert the Raw data file to an image file.

I used lightroom3, which I'm still learning, and the B&W creative 4.

What would make them sharper? A shorter focal length I assume?
Thanks to all comments and critiques for I am willing to learn and become better than my best.

A faster shutte speed so camera shake doesn't soften the focus would make then sharper.

A longer focal length makes it easier to blur the background. Shorter focal lengths eventually begin to distort the subjects face.

Lightroom is not a good tool to use for converting to black and white.

A lot of new photographers get Lightroom not understanding that it's editing function is not it's main purpose.

Lightroom was developed by Adobe for professional photographers that make a lot of photographs, like more than 1000 a week, week-in, week-out. Lightroom is Digital Asset Management (DAM) (database) software that allows a more streamlined work flow for editing images in big bunches, and for quickly retrieving photos in various sepate folders that have common keywords. Like searching for all the photos that have the keywords Bride, blue, high heels, toast.
Lightroom was intended to be a compliment to Photoshop CS for photographers. It was never intended to be a sole image editing solution. However, many people buy it simply because it costs less than Photoshop CS.
