Hello everybody! I was BBQ'ing today and decided to take my camera out with me and snap a few pictures while waiting for the food to cook. Please let me know what you think. Looking for some C&C.

I am very new, so take with grain of salt;) They all look a bit underexposed to me.
1: There is no 'grab' to my eye. I can examine for a minute and find the point of interest, but it doesn't pop.
2: I guess this could be an interesting pic if the background wasn't so close to the subject. The red black and white could really pop in the right values.
3: The alignment of the subject is odd. Good job of blurring background and focus on subject. The subject really sticks out, but color is dull.

Thank you, I appreciate your comments. For number 1, I think i should have used a different lens. The yard was in the shade and there was a small patch of sunlight. I was trying to get the sunlight in the middle of the picture and the shade around it, so the "pop" would be the grass with the light. But I guess I was to close.

i think it would be better if you submitted only one photo for opinions. anyway, the first image, to describe it i see good monochromatic color, good texture, and seeming image of movement. the use of selective focus and lighting which give the image 'mood' it could stand a bit of cropping on the left side. looks like an impressionist painting and i think you were successful in this one.

3-5 pictures is best for C&C, not one.

All three look underexposed to some degree. Number one by far the least underexposed.

None of the pictures have anything to grab the eye or create interest except perhaps the first one again. #2 merely looks like a snapshot.

1. I like seeing the focal plane, but thats about it...its too tight, if this was 100 acres of wheat (or what ever it is) blowing in the breeze I think it could be interesting, if you had the dof to see it all, and it is underexposed.

2. underexposed, uninteresting, distracting metal bar,

3. underexposed, uninteresting crooked owl on a stick, dont like the bokeh on this lens. at least you didnt center the owl, but he is looking off at the edge of the photo.

I heartily disagree, and encourage 1 C&C photo per thread. You may have noticed I usually avoid doing C&C on more than 1 photo at a time. If I do C&C more than one, the photos are generally more related to each other than what was posted here.

I'm sure not going to spend any more time and effort than the photographer was willing to devote to making the photos in the first place, which in this instance seems to have been little or none:

...snap a few pictures while waiting for the food to cook.....

You're welcome to disagree. The majority of forum members advise posting 3-5 pictures at a time. I for one am considerably less likely to comment on a single picture than I am on a 3-5 image long string of pictures. I don't know why, but that's just me.

To be honest, they don't do much for me.

I am just learning myself but I know what I like as my view is not a view of a photographer just what I like or don't like more about my personal taste really. I like number 1 underexposed or not its interesting to me It say's come here to play take in some fresh air and get away for a little while sitting some place nice and quiet if you know what I mean but I know that is not what is important to you its more about exposure and taking great photos but just my 2 cents worth

Ouch. That's harsh.

I think it can go either way. If you want C&C on one fine, if you have 3 or 4 fine. But I really like to see what people thought about the issues/problems with the photo them
selves. Then if there is something else we can always add that in. I think number one would have had more potential if I think like Ryan said you had an entire field with movement etc. And please tell us what kind of C&C your really looking for. Are you trying to develop better exposures, more interesting composition etc. Good luck and keep shooting.
