Advice Needed - Canon RP vs R8 vs 6D Mark II

I guess it all depends what you are after the camera to do for you. I bought my Canon EOS R barely 1 year ago when there were many other options out there like the R8 etc. But the price was so attractive it really was a no brainer and the camera can do everything i want it to do. Newer cameras advertise lots of "New" features but determine if the new features will really make a difference for what you are planning on doing.
Did exactly that myself. Especially since the "R zero" has the sensor cover, and Im swapping primes. Also I still have a good collection of big batteries left over from FF Canon SLRs.

A used R zero is about the same $ as a new R8. Clearly a more advanced camera, but nothing about its interface was brought forward to the newer models. It was just too unconventional.

Altho many folks prefer the opposite, I like the blank exterior of the R zero, not cluttered with external dials for features that I dont use ... not even a mode selector dial. Everything hidden !

Just to close the thread: Eventually, I decided to go with a used Canon EOS R (~800 euros). Now I'm thinking of getting a new lens for it because my EF-S 18-55mm doesn't work well in combination with this camera. When it is set to full-frame (FF), the image quality is reduced to 10 MP. I found several options to address this gap (I already have a 50mm prime and 70-300mm zoom lens):
  • Used Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM (~309 euros)
  • Used Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM (~450 euros)
  • Used Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM (~300 euros)
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts about these options.
The 24-105/4.0 is the obvious choice. Dont forget to budget $150 for the EF lens adapter.

Cograts on the "R zero". Not many users choose it becuz its interface is distinctly different than the mainstream. I happen to really love the interface, with no external dials cluttering the camera !

I do hope you like the interface. Its part of what makes a used R zero so affordable ... as too many users couldnt accomodate it.

BTW, youre getting the large battery. One spare is enuf for some users (but I bring 2 or 3). You also have the sensor shield when swapping lenses (not found on the lesser models).

Thank you for the advice! I also found that the 24-105mm f/4 is one of the best options within my budget. It will definitely take some time to learn how to switch between its features, but so far, so good.

Canon R8 and RP are practically the same camera, so you can choose whichever you want or offers the same price. I'd like to recommend the 6D MII however I consider that choosing a DSLR is a dead end road right now, support for lenses, accesories and everything related will keep diminishing over the years. So just choose whichever is cheaper, if your used option is in good state I'd go for it.

Unfortunately, your comparison info was wasted effort. Read the thread and youll see that its ill timed. OTOH, the advice about seeking the used options has yielded great success !

If you shake at all, or use long lenses, you might want to look at Canon cameras with IBIS. The R8 does not have IBIS, but the R6 or R7 do. R6 or R6 Mark II are full-frame, but the R7 is cropped. All three of these would be, in my opinion, much better choices over the R8. You can probably get a used R6 at a very decent price.
