I imagine some of the old schooler here (not to mention names) probably shot with some pretty low quality gear.....back in the 1800's kind of thing. Any suggestions?

i'll have to ask my four year old if he will let me use it. Right now I've resorted to sneaking it at night after I put him to bed.

I shot with a PowerShot G3 the other day, actually. 4.0 mp. Not too shabby, believe it or not. Surprisingly sharp. Definitely not the worst camera I've ever used.

Mike Lamb shoots with a point and shoot. He does fantastic work too-really artistic, different stuff. I'd say he's among my favorite photographers here.

is the only reason I am contemplating this camera at all. im trying to envision a situation where I could make a amazing shot with this thing that my better cameras couldn't do.

well yeah, more so. i think i need to do some research and find some examples of some stuff that isn't quite toy camera look but close.
