50 things every ______ should know.

10. Listen to your instincts.

If your work doesn’t excite you, then it won’t excite anyone else. It’s hard to fake passion for mediocre work – scrap it.

If people started to do this half of the posts in this section would never be posted!

I know.
A little self editing goes a long way.
But we all started somewhere, and all our first pictures were precious.
Wanna see my 20 seagull shots on Flickr?

As a design professional, these are relevant in every aspect of the business, and beyond. I do think some of them needs elaboration to fully convey their importance.
For example, pick your battle.

Most young designers who are new to the industry are inspired and energetic, see everything as an opportunity for improvement and wants to make big impact quickly. What they don't yet understand is that most people don't work for the same passion. They are passionate, but perhaps not about the work. They may be passionate about getting a promotion, a raise, a bonus, an early day off, an easy way out, the pay check, or simply being able to go home and have dinner with family on time.

If the young stud who's all passionate about the job and the idealistic world don't understand this, he will struggle to understand why the world is so imperfect. No, it's just HIS own world that is imperfect because he chooses to see so.

No worries, not the end of the world. Picking the battle simply means understand your own capabilities and apply your energy and passion appropriately. Go for small but effective results first and work your way through. When you eventually have gained the trust and credibility among your peers, you can then pick a bigger battle.

Just my 2 cents.

22. Seek criticism, not praise. You learn nothing by being told how great you are. Even if you think your work’s perfect – seek criticism, you can always ignore it.

Hence my initial search for a photography forum. (Not being told that I'm great.. Lol)

This post just made a light go off in my head. And i'm not really that young (or a stud). Thanks!

44. If you’re going to fail, fail well.

Being ambitious means you have to take on things you think you can’t do. Failures are unfortunate, but they are sometimes necessary. #the50

46. Take responsibility for failure.

If a job’s going wrong take responsibility. It feels counter-intuitive, but responsibility means you can do something about it. #the50

50. Don’t take yourself too seriously.

Take your work seriously, take the business of your craft seriously, but don’t take yourself seriously. People who do are laughed at. #the50
