500D AE Lock

So on the 500d the manual says that if you hit the asterisk-like button it should lock in the exposure settings, but when I hit that button the icon for it doesn't pop up in the viewfinder like it should. I know I've gotten this to work before, what do I have to do to get this to work? What am I doing wrong?

You're not trying to use this in the Basic Zone settings, are you?
