50mm Lenses Comparison

This is an overall sharpness comparison for 50mm lens wider than f/2 (looking at SLRGear's lens sharpness chart)

From best to worse overall sharpness wide open:
1. Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S Nikkor and Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM

2. Sony 50mm f/1.8 SAM SAL-50F18

3. Carl Zeiss 50mm f/2 Makro-Planar T* 2/50 and Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM

4. Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor

5. Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AF-S Nikkor and Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor

6. Carl Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 Planar T* 1.4/50

7. Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

From best to worse overall sharpness at f/2.8:
1. Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM
2. Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S Nikkor and Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM
3. Carl Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 Planar T* 1.4/50
4. Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

Proves that Nikkor lens can be used wide open but never use Canon lens wide open.

I'm confused - firstly I can see the list and the order; but I don't see any supporting data nor examples; which means whilst it might be a valid list you can't say what is an isn't usable as there isn't anything presented to justify the claims.

Also the sigma 50mm f1.4 is missing from the test

But I agree. The credibility of this thread is badly diminished because of the lack of data.

But it can't be as that test was only for Nikon mount lenses - it didn't have canon in it at all - plus it had the sigma

He has the Sigma listed as well. But you make a solid point about it having the Canon-mount as well. Not sure. Maybe he owns them and popped them into where he thinks it belongs.
