I'm using a shoe mounted flash on it.
Its a cheap $50 flash made by bower.

The problem I'm having is that when I try to use the camera in Av mode with the flash attached it keeps dragging the shutter.

It keeps giving me 1/2 or 1" exposures indoors and fires the flash. This causes a drag effect when I really don't want that.

When I try manual mode or P or Tv it uses the flash fine with out issues.

Is it just that its a cheap flash or am I missing a setting somewhere.

Ive been using ISO 600-800 for all of the exposures.

It's because your camera doesn't recognize there's a flash on it because it's probably a full manual flash. Your camera needs to be in manual mode for the most consistent exposure. Don't bother with Tv either.

Try this, 1/125, f/5.6 ISO 400.

If it's too bright, turn your ISO down. If it's still too bright, stop your lens down or power down the flash.
