5d M2 and flash

Fill flash is supposed to be significantly under the main light. Lacks precise control? Nikon offers incremental power output control over its built-in flash units in manual mode, as well as one-third f/stop control over a multiple stop range. Somebody must not understand the use of the word "precise"; one-third of an f/stop is a precise control of the flash. A pop-up flash is VERY strong under lower-light conditions, and will be effective under many sunny conditions--as FILL light, it would typically be about three f/stops below the ambient light level, thereby making a pop-up flash a PERFECT source of quick, always-with-the-camera fill light...

Maybe somebody is a newbie who has very little idea that fill flash needs no diffusion when used outdoors... Ringflash--LMAO. I have to chuckle at people with a year or two of experience acting as if they've been around the block.

So, be careful of who you listen to...the answers you get might be quite unreliable, or simply from a misinformed newbie.

Direct sun is not lower light conditions and a pop up flash won't look any where near as good as a larger light source and won't always be powerful enough to compete with the sun. I'm not sure what planet you're living on, but a sunny day on earth is ISO 100 f/100 f/16. You're telling me that your pop up flash can compete with that? How about when your subject isn't right infront of you?

And laugh all you want at the ringflash, but you're the one who wanted to try and point out people not reading the Strobist blog when apparently you haven't taken the time to read it either.

And further more, keep on with the insults. It really makes your lack of maturity shine. How old are you? 17?

Just noticed you have the same cameras I do( although the MII is still in transit). Do you ever pick up ur rebel anymore?

Em, I generally use the 5D2 most of the time. But once in a while I'll use the T1i, such as for back up use or if I'm taking a pic of the 5D2  (see below) The T1i is a great camera and you have lots of options with it. I just realized that instead of hobby I wanted to move toward wedding end quicker so I ended up purchasing the 5d2 so quickly (within 2 months of buying my T1i) It gives me the range for ISO that I wasn't getting and of course, the full frame. Also, when I use T1i I never really used the pop up flash because I bought the 580ex right away and I think I only used it ONCE. See the 3rd picture. But don't hold me 100% on that because I don't remember 100% if I had my flash w/ me or not.... But beside that, I use the T1i as a backup camera all time. If I'm at a wedding I might use it if I have to or sometimes I'll use the 70-200 on it and the wide angled with the 5D2

Great pictures! I've had the T1i for a year now and it was not so great in low light. I'd bump the ISO to just 200 and the noise would be so loud! I'm shooting my first wedding in 2 weeks and realized that since the ENTIRE wedding is inside the church I better step up my game. So I went for it and bought the camera:-) I'm so stinkin excited I can't stand it! It finally shipped today. Anyways, I also bought the 430 ex II speedlite .

oh you bought the 5d mk2?? You will LOVE it! What lenses are you going to be using with it? The 28-135? Remember the EF-S lenses won't work with it. How are you going to use the flash? I'd suggest you start practicing bouncing it off walls and ceilings.

I've had the flash for a few weeks now
and have been practiced bouncing it( works much better then pointing it at ur subject.

I have the 28-135 and 50mm 1.8( crappy lenses but I was more desperate for a bette body( camera that is:-)

i see, well yeah you'll be fine bouncing flash if you know how to do it properly. with the new body you have the ISO to help you. check out my other posts about ISO and you'll see how well it takes images at 5000-6400 ISO. I even did a test at 25,600 ISO and was surprised how well it took the photos. You'll be fine as long as you know what you're doing.

Derrel mentioned something great that everybody seems to have ignored. Nikon's CLS system (that's their built in wireless flash system) can be triggered using most of nikons pop up flashes. While Canon users (save the 7D, I think) pay extra for Pocket Wizards or Canon IR transmitters, Nikon users (save the beginner nikons and the D3s/x) can trigger their flashes right out of the box. People like to complain about the reliability of the CLS or any infrared system, but I've shot with Nikon's CLS in broad daylight using my pop up flash to trigger 3 strobes no problem. Saves me a lot of cash... I dont want to have to spend $200 per transmitter/reciever!

I'm sure no one who buys a camera at the professional/prosumer level will use the pop up flash... save asian parents who like to look like they know what they're doing ;)

Unfortunately, CLS is only good for some speedlights. If you're using non Nikon TTL compatible strobes, which is most of the choices of flashes out there, then the best you can hope for is using it as an optical slave trigger.
