How about the Sig 150-500? I'm thinking I could maybe pick up a good deal on one with the release of the Tamron 150-600?

The Sig 150-500 isn't that bad. You pretty much have to shoot it at F8 at 500, but it is useable. AF is pretty sure footed.. here is my set with the 150-500 Sigma 150-500 OS - a set on Flickr

Anyhow, shooting 500mm would be nice.

This was shot at 200mm using my 70-200mm VRII. I had to get pretty close to do it...thankfully these guys weren't all that camera shy.

I don't shoot sports just mainly want the lens for wildlife and closeups.Do you think where the auto focus is slow and "hunts" a lot that i would be better off sticking with my 70-300? I have a chance to buy a second hand one for $850 plus shipping.Its not the new af-s of course.

The AF is slow on the older 80-400, but it is a decent lens. $850 is NUTS!!! Keh has used ones from 600-700 with a 6 month warranty depending on condition and accessories.. - KEH.com

thanks bud for the info,will check them out.So from what I have been reading ,the 70-400's af is slow but a decent lens.The main difference/issue is the af between the old and new.The new 80-400 afs is alot better but a huge price difference and a huge investment,not quite worth it in my book so thats out the door.The nikkor's retain their resale value alot better than any other lens so if you were to resell you'll get a better return.The sigma 150-500's af is better but shes a huge lens to be mucking around everywhere. Did I miss anything?
