We have lived here 40 years & we have never seen these creatures before. They are excavating holes about ¾"/20mm in diameter in the ground near our foundation. These are cropped about 50%.

Edit: I think I got the ID: Great Golden Digger Wasp.

Neat, a gold digger.

A beneficial solitary wasp, it kills katydid and grasshoppers and unless handled is not known to sting.
