A change of scenery

The entire image is under exposed.
You seem to have favored not clipping the highlights on the log at the expense of the rest of the image.
A better choice might have been to adjust the exposure of the whole image with the exception of the log - either by burning or other selective techniques in post.

A quick edit to show what I think corrects some of the exposure issues:

The burning around the log is sloppy, but I think it gets the point across.
I also had to use other methods for exposure correction than I would have preferred as I was working with a reduced jpeg.
I leveled the shot as well.

You still have competing subjects in the frame as Runnah stated.

Learn to use a histogram. It can help if you don't have colour correction software. Actually it can help regardless.
Get out of town more and keep trying!

Thank you, Ill keep that in mind. Im going to look at it again this weekend and play with it. See I can recreate that.

I have avoided the histogram. I dont look at it, guess its time for me to learn how to use it.

I didn't even see it until today, even though I press "new posts" constantly.

SAME thing here for me Steve--but hell, I JUST saw this and it's like 7:19 PM west-coast time...I never saw this post until like 2 minutes ago... and I hit New Posts like a bazillion times per day...I do NOT, EVER, read the forums "by category"...so, unless it;'s pretty high up, it might as well be three days old...

The photo***"ehhhh...I dunno, the algae-like beach is kind of gross, and the bridge is unlike any we have out my way, but it's so far away I cannot see the bridge much. I think the piece of old wood itself might be interesting if seen in really HIGH-detail, such as with a really high-resolution camera and lens and tripoid mounted and blown up BIG. As a web-seen shot, this does not have a lot of compelling detail, which is one of the biggest issues with landscape work as seen on the web...the web is like 3/4 of a MP for most people...I have a 4+ -MP monitor (2560 x 1920), but the image is like 1,000 pixels wide or so, so...the goodness is hidden...
