The first one tilts left which is revealed by the brown vertical line on the right. I would straighten, crop off some of the right edge and that bench support tonal distraction and then crop off the bow tied belt. With out the attention taking belt the composition takes on more "life" The right edge as well is an attention taker because of the open space by the bench support. I like yours quite a bit, I love it after these adjustments.
The second one lacks context. Here is an example of when closer is not better. It is OK but with context - depending - it could be awesome. The first one is an example of closer can be better.
