A couple of proms -- much to learn yet

I tried getting some shots of my son & friends prior to prom, but it was a bit of a zoo. I managed to get him and a couple friends posed ok, but as the size of the group grew, along with umpty-seven parents waving iPhones around, it became just about impossible to herd all the cats. I have a new appreciation for how frustrating it must be for event photographers to have a bunch of other "photographers" running around in front of them.

Anyhow, ranting aside, I grabbed this one just about the time everyone was getting tired of posing, and I kind of like it:

Portraits have never been a strong suit of mine, and I'm more and more convinced I need to work on posing & interaction in order to get any decent results. Hopefully, that'll keep getting easier with experience. This one's from another prom - a friend is hosting a foreign exchange student, so I got some shots of him before his prom, too, and I thought this one turned out ok (could've used a bit more light in front):
