A couple shots from my backyard

I'm still getting to know my Rebel XT so I walked around outside the house a bit yesterday and I liked these two shots..what do you think?

1: f/5.6, 1/160, ISO 100

2: f/5.6, 1/40, ISO 100 This one looks to me like I used flash, but I didn't..The sun was hitting the fence posts and the ground was shaded..I'm not sure I like it - what do you think?

I agree on the second..the more I look at it, the more I think it's just awful. Thanks for the feedback.
