It's a photo like this where I just wish I had better gear. Oh well. Gear or not...I got the shot!

you got the right idea of the subject you chose, however you need to zoom in more or gotten closer to the subject. maybe lower the brightness and increase the contrast a bit. what camera were you using?

Zoom in more? lol Sadly my little nikon coolpix s3000 can't zoom anymore than that. Which is why i'm going shopping TODAY! Next animal shot should be closer! With more detail.

Tiny subject, dead center.

Have you looked up the rule of thirds, or elements of composition?

I have yes. Now and will be trying to use them more often. It's tough with a moving animal. =) I'll try and go for it next time.

i noticed that your username is animal hunter and seems like your interesting in wildlife shots. if thats true then i recommend you to get a zoom lens of about 200mm.

When I went shopping, I tried actually splurging for a nikkon 300mm lens but the guy had to order it.

I dont know much bout the P&S cameras now but I would suggest getting a basic used DSLR and some decent glass. Then again I'm still learning with my own gear but I don't think with a coolpix you can get the kind of shots you are wanting. Like I said I could be wrong.

Hey All,
I've recently purshased a Nikon 5100 and am looking at getting a lens with a bit more reach in it so I can hit my animal shots a little closer up.
I am considering the following telephoto in addition to the kit lens.
NIKKOR AF-S DX 55-300mm VR II

Any thoughts from you wildlife shooters out there for a beginner entering into the field? (Not sure why this sentence is all bolded out =) )

look into adorama.com for some decent deals bro and welcome to the fun life of DSLR. I don't know if its true or not but I was once warned to stay away from the kit lens. Best wait for some of the pros on here....

Oh... thought this thread was about me...

Nice catch, AnimalHunter... looking forward to seeing what you can do with a longer lens.

Carry on.
