Here are a few of my eldest niece from the Jr county fair. I couldn't control much of anything environmentally speaking and clouds were passing in front of the sun so the ambient light changed considerably, quickly and often. I was standing on the back bench of the bleachers so as not to get in any of the spectators way (and so they would not get in mine :D) so they were pretty far out when they were on the other side of the ring. Did some cropping but other than that I haven't altered them. Any suggestions would be great as the fair goes on all week and I'll be heading beck there several times between now and next Sunday. I think I 'm going to try some panning shots next time (tomorrow).

She looks like she's drowning in that helmet and coat! Given your equipment and the conditions, I think these turned out very well. #1 I think is the strongest showing good composition and expression, unfortunately it looks like you may have missed the focus or used insufficient DoF; the horse's eye seems sharp, but the child's appears soft.

Thanks, could have been ether, DoF or OoF. I was shooting wide open to try and blur out the distracting background and as necessity later on as it began to get dark, however I do also seem to have a problem focusing, I've noticed many of my shots since I've started seem soft. I wish I could have gotten some more of her smiling but it was very hot and she was pretty hot/tired as the day went on.

I agree on 1 being the best, and I thought it looked a little soft, but didn't realize until tirediron pointed it out that the horse was more in focus.

i like #2 better, mostly because you got both the horse and rider in focus, id prob just crop a little off the left of the horse to even it up. but cool stuff :)

Number 2 would be the best if it had a slightly better crop, the horse ears were forward and the reins wernt twisted.. and if she actually knew how to hold double reins. (First thing I picked up on) Not that that effects the photo..

Thanks, I wish I could have gotten it a little sharper and that the horse had a more dignified look on his face.
