1. This was a last minute family shoot I was asked to do in their backyard. I realize the "props" aren't ideal, but it's what they had.

#2 seems very soft/OOF, you have glare on her glasses in #3 and I would clone the boo boo off her knee in #4. The composition/posing is "meh". #3 is probably the most appealing of the bunch.

Im no expert but in number 1 a good use of balanced flash or a reflector could of been useful to bring them out as their faces seem all in shadow.
Number 2 doesn't set anything off in my brain I just see a little girl infront of a wall.
Number three has a slight off-putting reflection in her glasses. There are ways to shoot glass without reflection but again I havent tried them so cant comment to harshly :-)
Number four I think the clutch bag is unnecessary and detracts.
These are just what I feel and may or may not be correct according to other more experienced shooters here. But for what its worth thats what I think.

C&C per req:

1. Last minute locations can be a challenge, no doubt, BUT you really should have had them bin the pink matteress/cushion. A black and white outfit is just about the worst choice; ask the clients to go inside and choose clothing with a narrower dynamic range. As mentioned, it desparately needs a fill camera right. Why not pose them closer to the pond and use a polarizing fitler; this would have reduced water reflection and increased sky/cloud contrast.

2. Not sure why, but there's something soft about her face. I'm sure there had to be a better background than a concrete wall...

3. As mentioned the reflection in the glasses is a real killer here. A simple position change, polarizing filter or use of a diffuser would almost certainly have eliminated that.

4. Arghhh!! NEVER use on-camera flash for portrait work, indoors or out! The dead-center, tiny catchlights are not attractive. Her skin has a slightly over-bright look from the flash as well. I would definitely have removed the purse, an don't forget to straighten clothing (her skirt).

Just my $00.02 worth - your mileage may vary.

They just look like snapshots to me. You really should study lighting and the use of fill flash. Before that though I think you should know how to focus and work on composition.
