Yeah, composition is what I'd work on. Do some research on the Rule Of Thirds and you'll graduate from snapshots to photographs.

Your white balance seems off in #1, and I'd go for a portrait crop. All the emtpy space does nothing for me. As for #2, why did you take it? What is it that you want us to see? A fire hydrant from a perspective we always see it? What were your intentions?

I certainly like the crop of #1 better than the original. I agree with Compaq about #2. The intent is not clear.

I linked you to a web site that covers some composition guidelines in one of your other threads.

Both #1 and #2 would have been stronger with the camera rotated 90° to the vertical image frame orientation.

Image composition is stonger when there is some drama and tension in the composition.

I suspect you're going to find there is a lot more, both artisitic and technical, to doing photography well than you antisipated.
