my buddy just got his Realtor license and asked me to take some pics for this website and business card... first time taking portaits.

Were done on 35mm f/18, D90.
Lighting was sb-700 w/ the fong dong half cloud

what could i have done better during the shot or in post ?

Background is quite distracting and first two look a bit underexposed.

Your buddy needs to smile. I think some may be put off by these. They are looking for a re agent not a model. People need to think he his going to be there best friend. Looking for or selling a house can be long drawn out miserable process. They will be spending a lot of time with him so they want to feel warm and invited. I don't get that from these photos. I like the scenery. If these were for another purpose I would have a different outlook

I think the first two are underexposed. The third shot is nice, but I don't think its what should be used for a realtors web page. I would suggest some head shots for use on the business card. Suggestions for the web site - I would say photos of him in front of a house holding some papers in his hand, sitting behind a desk and on a phone...things that make him looke like a real estate agent and like he's working. As Matt24138 said, these look more like model photos.

I agree. For business card or web, your friend need to look more friendly and professional. Dagwood has good idea.

Your buddy is a handsome guy, but he needs to lighten up a bit and smile. In the first picture he looks like a Yakuza that leaves a bloody trail of bodys in something directed by John Woo.

I have to agree with all statements so far, and add that the ominous sky only adds to this feeling.

Take the fong dong thing off and get it off camera! Also, step up to the biggest F-stop that you can to blur the background.
