A good lens for group photos...

I have been meaning to buy a lens that is better for those large family photos and staggered wedding party photos. Anyone have any suggestions/ advice as to which one is the best one to get. I am still going by word of mouth advertising, at least until my kids are a little older, and so I am trying to keep my costs down for now. Up until now I have been using a 17-85mm lens and really really need to get something better suited for the group shots and so on. Are there any good lens out there for under a $1000 or even less????

You don't say, so I can only go on Nikkor info.

I would think 17-85mm would be perfect focal lengths for group shots. What are you not getting out of your lens?

*scratches head* What's wrong with the 17-85 for group shots? Is it the barrel distortion on the low end?
