The top one is definitely improved, and if you bumped up the contrast much more you might have a problem.

Maybe a little more contrast on the bottom one...? Not much, I'd goof around between 10-15% and see what that gets you. If the eyes weren't so prominent you could leave it as is, but the eyes make the image in this one.
