Fortunately, light slows down when it's not in a vacuum. It slows more in water than it does in air.

OMG All opto-electronics thesis projects are the same!

Seriously this was similar in execution to what our PhDs in the lab were working on using lasers to measure fluid flow. It's been done with one laser, as has been taking a photo of a lightwave.

While I was in the lab their latest toy was a set of 12 lasers (providing 1 dimension) which via mirrors they scanned across the surface to get a 2D view
