Currently looking at a Nikon 200-400 mm lens. The owner says it has a high pitched whining noise in autofocus. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I would hate to buy this lens and have the internal motor go out on it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Lonnie

It does sound like a motor issue. I had similar on an old Canon 18-55 kit lens and was told that's what it was. Being a cheap lens I binned it without considering a repair.

Thank you for telling me about your lens experience. The 200-400 Nikon lenses are selling from $1800 to $2500. Have always wanted one of those lenses. But can't afford a brand new one.

Ah well, there's a fair difference in value between your lens and the one I binned. I feel your pain:madass:

There is a 200-400 AFS ON Portland Craigslist for $750.noise is probably the motor.

Does the lens feel smooth in manual mode? If the lens takes some effort maybe the motor is trying to move a binding lens. Or maybe the motor retired and does not want to work anymore and is whining about it. :allteeth:

Probably too late for my reply to matter, but I'm wondering what your decision was. I'll bet it costs at least $600 for a Nikon repair.
