Abandoned Television (Half of My Hometown is Deserted)

what do you mean "toned" them? That photo looks netural black and white on my calibrated monitior

sorry for the double post ( i hate that :) )

what do you mean "toned" them?

Not this photo in particular, but I took several other photos that I tried to make an HDR image out of, and I couldn't get them to look right even after I tonemapped them. They still looked flat and lifeless.

Rex, if you're having difficulty with the HDR process, try the following:

Take 2 images on a tripod. Expose the first for the interior. Expose the second for what is outside. Make sure you get the exposures correct at the scene (no highlights blown, or shadow detail lost). Then, manually blend the interior and exterior with masking in your photo editing software.

Good luck.

I think that's what I'm going to have to end up doing. Whenever I try the HDR, the inside is always too bright and there ends up being not enough shadow.

Very creative...I like it! It also reminds me of TVs in abandoned homes in games like CoD, Resistance, etc. Did you get any of your inspiration from that? What is your hometown? It's amazing that circumstances would lead to a entire residential area being abandoned..

I really like the image, not sure how I feel about the static .. i guess it works ok.

As for getting HDR without the HDR look, try enfuse. It's a different approach than tone mapping and usually gives more natural results and has the benefit of outputting a full 16 bit image.

Enfuse - PanoTools.org Wiki

Select a GUI from the bottom of the page. If using mac, I would suggest ImageFuser

Here are a few more from the same excursion. I never realized how literally empty my town is.
