Wondering on prices for this lens, what is the most you'd pay for an used one from 2012. I've heard really good things about this lens from a lot of different sources and a guy is selling one for $100. I could get a new one for $109 on amazon.

What are your thoughts on this?

I have it and love it but I find it extremely finicky. Sometimes it just won't take the shot even though settings are correct. I paid $149 new from Henrys.

Just make sure your camera will autofocus this lens. It has no built in motor so only nikons with built in motors will drive it

My thought process is if you can get a new one with a warranty for 10 bucks more, spend the extra 10 bucks. As to the 50 itself, everything I've read and every one I know who owns one says it's a great lens. The only "drawback" some have mentioned is if you are using it on a AFS-C crop sensor body then sometimes it's a little too much focal length for working indoors and in more confined spaces such as smaller rooms. On a full frame the 50 mm is pretty good in this respect, but on a crop sensor your actually getting an angle of view at 75 mm which can be a bit long for shooting indoors. If such would be the case for you you might want to consider the 35 mm instead.

Also as someone else mentioned the older "D" versions do not have a built in focus motor so something to consider before going with the older model of the lens.

B&H shows 13 Nikon 50mm prime lenses ranging from $109 to $699. Make sure you are comparing the same lens between the person selling his to the one on Amazon. They may well not be the same.

Thank you for your responses! I'm pretty sure it's the same lens, but maybe I'll pass on this one as my camera has no built in motor and as robbins.photo said, maybe the 35mm would be a better option in this case. Thank you for your help guys!

The AF-S 35mm f1.8 g will autofocus on your camera as will the 50mm f1.8g

As jaomul mentioned they do make both an AF-S G version 35 mm and 50 mm with built in autofocus motors if your camera is like mine and doesn't have one built into the body. They really are pretty reasonably priced:

Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Nikkor Lens for DSLR Cameras - USA Warranty 2183

That's the 35 mm version, brand new with warranty for $197. You could probably do even better price wise if you can find one used or maybe even refurbished.

Nice thanks for the links. Originally I was looking at the 50mm f1.8g, but i was just wondering on that one because of the price, but like you said the new ones are within reasonable price. I will probably end up getting one of those two. Thank you again!

No problem at all, my next lens will most likely be the 35 mm AF-S G version, for christmas this year I got myself a 70-200 mm Sigma OS F/2.8 so it will probably be a few paychecks before I get one of these myself.. lol.

Tell him so and offer $75. If it is a private sale, you also save taxes and, presumably, shipping. Just try it out and make sure everything works fine, and before that even happens make sure that it will autofocus on your camera before you waste his time.

haha it will probably be a few paychecks for me as well! I bought my new camera a few weeks ago and that left me broke, but I couldn't resist, I've been wanting one for quite some time now. Everyday I learn a little bit more about it, like I did in this post.

@bc_steve: From what I learn about my camera it won't autofocus on it, so I think I'm not going to make him an offer, I think I'd rather get the 50mm f1.8g. But thanks!

Yes, if it won't AF it is worth paying the extra money for the G lens.

Maybe your camera is set to autofocus in the S, or Single-shot, focus-priority mode?
