settings:
Nikon d100: 28-80mm.
f-stop: 4.2
shutter speed: 1/100
and a nikon sb-800 fired wirelessly with a pocket wizard.
I was set-up with the camera on a tripod about 15 feet away and directly behind the subject. and I had my nikon sb-800 sitting on a reciever about 15 feet to the left just about between me and the subject on the ground pointed up about 20* with a funnel/zisor over the head of the flash to create that spotlight-like effect.
As for the subject being dead centered, I agree that's something I shoulda fixed but nothing a little cropping out just a little of the left side of the photo won't fix.
Thanks for all the comments and critiquing so far everyone!
